Brunei – Bandar Seri Begawan

Day 18: Country #4

Brunei is a very small Muslim country in the middle of South East Asia, bordering Malaysia on the Borneo island. With it’s rich oil reserves, the country records one of the highest GDP’s per capita in Asia, but I found it somewhat lacking in actuality. Being a less then common tourist country, I was lucky to find a guesthouse with a host that offered to pick me up at the airport. He invites me to join his grand tour in a couple of days, then gives me a quick tour as he drives to the town center to meet another guest for some grocery shopping so they can make dinner for everyone. I found it to be a great opportunity to learn more about the city from the other guests and make plans for the next day.

Tip:
Free airport pickup is one of the best “amenities” which I look for when booking a place to stay. Sometimes I even pick a place solely on the airport pickup. Not only does it save money because airports tend to be far from city centers, but it saves transit time, sometimes comes with a brief overview tour during the drive, and if you plan your schedule well, it expands your sight seeing options, too – so long as they’re along the way to the airport/train station/bus stop’s that other guests may request drop off or pick up’s from.
